The Open Heaven is a comprehensive study of the apocalyptic texts of Judaism and early Christianity, and a major contribution to the prolonged argument about the significance of apocalyptic as a key to the thought-world of the early Christians. Christopher Rowland reinforces the view that apocalyptic has a central role to play, but he challenges the common assumption of a close link between apocalyptic and eschatology. Dr Rowland examines the Jewish apocalypses from the earliest parts of I Enoch (c. 3rd century BC.) to those written after the destruction of Herod's Temple (e.g. 4 Ezra. Syriac Baruch, and the Apocalypse of Abraham). He finds comparatively little evidence for a belief system characterized by pessimism about the present age and future expectation, and offers instead an understanding of apocalyptic as the disclosure of heavenly knowledge which can shed light on the meaning of human existence in the present. He gathers evidence which indicates that the apocalypses report ecstatic practices in the Judaism of the Second Temple period, which might support his claim that there was an experiential basis for the visions they describe. Turning to the early Christian literature, Dr Rowland establishes that visions and revelations of the same type played a significant part. It is in these accounts of visions, which the disclosure of heavenly knowledge is a basis for action in the present, that we are asked to look for the influence of apocalyptic on early Christian thought. Christopher Rowland is Dean of Jesus College, Cambridge. Condition is good. All pages are present, legible, fair and fine. Dust jacket is also present. Book is subject to some shelf wear and marks.
