The Oxford English Dictionary Being A Corrected Re-issue With an Introduction, Supplement, And Bibliography Of A New English Dictionary On Historical Principles Founded Mainly On The Materials Collected By The Philological Society And Edited By James A. H. Murray, Henry Bradley, W. A. Craigie, C. T. Onions Oxford - At The Clarendon Press. 1933. 12 Volumes With A One-Volume Supplement. Volumes: I - A-B II - C III - D-E IV - F-G V - H-K VI - L-M VII - N-Poy VIII - Poy-Ry IX - S-Soldo X - Sole-Sz XI - T-U XII - V-Z XIII - Supplement And Bibliography These 13 volumes of the 1933 Oxford English Dictionary are in very good condition. Each book has a previous owner's name plate on its front pastedown (please see photograph). There are no other internal markings or annotations. The front and back pastedowns and endpapers are the only pages that seem to have aged in any way. The front endpapers have tanned leaving the rectangular shape of the name plate from the opposite side sitting untanned in the middle (please see photographs). This is seen in each volume. The text pages of these volumes are in near fine condition. The paper is still wonderfully clean and bright. The pages have not yellowed, there is no evidence of foxing or staining. There do not appear to be any grubby finger marks in the outer margins and the pages have not creased or torn. They are in truly remarkable condition. The edges of the text blocks are also in very good condition. Unlike the pages, they have picked up the odd mark here and there but these are small and infrequent. There is still no evidence of foxing. The pages of these volumes sit together incredibly well. They appear free from creasing and tearing. Volume V H-K has a page with some excess material at its corner which protrudes from the edge of the text block. The bindings of these books feel tight and there are no loose or missing pages. The hinges of these books are reinforced with a linen strip and twelve out of thirteen volumes have unbroken ones. Volume VII N-poy is the largest volume and the only one with damaged hinges. Both the front and back hinges are cracked (please see photograph). This is most likely a result of the weight of its text block and its unwieldiness. These hinge breaks can only be seen internally and have had no effect on the covers. They are still firmly attached. These volumes have blue cloth boards with vibrant gilt lettering and the Oxford crest on their spines. There is very little by way of wear or damage to these covers. The boards are not exposed, the edges are not rubbed and the corners have held their square shape well. The spines are sun bleached and in some cases this sun bleaching has crept around to the face of the covers (please see photograph for example). As might be expected, the material at the ends of the spines is a little frilly from these books having been repeatedly taken on and off of shelves. There is no tearing at these points however and no loss. The centres of the spines have darker patches from handling. This can be seen in all volumes. This is a fascinating set of dictionaries in very good condition. They have clean text pages and only minor wear to their exteriors. Vol VII is a good candidate for repair. Scarcely found as a complete 13 volume set. (PLEASE NOTE: Due to the value and weight of these items, they will be dispatched by courier.) From The History Of The Oxford English Dictionary: '(...) as soon as the original ten volumes of the New English Dictionary were completed, Craigie and Onions, the two editors still involved with the project, began updating it. In 1933, a single-volume Supplement to the Dictionary was published. Also at this time the original Dictionary was reprinted in twelve volumes and the work was formally given its current title, the Oxford English Dictionary. The twelve-volume Oxford English Dictionary and the single-volume Supplement represented the final statement from Oxford for many years to come.'
