'The Particle Hunters' by Yuval Ne'eman and Yoram Kirsh. Cambridge University Press, 1986. Updated version of the 1983 original. Paperback, 272 pp. Good condition. "This book", the blurb on the back hopefully opines, "is the result of collaboration between a world-famous elementary particle physicist and a physicist specializing in popular science writing to give a non-technical account of the fascinating story of the search for the fundamental building blocks of matter." This is some new meaning of the epithet 'non-technical'. Here are two extracts, chosen quite at random: "p + p - p + n + p+ + p+ + p- " (you don't say!) and "The probability of interaction between a beam of p+ + and stationary protons, as a function of the centre-of-mass energy (E). The prominent peak at the vicinity of 1.2 GeV is the resonance D++ (1232)." Well, I never knew that! Except that I still don't, and, alas, I never will, since it's written in . . . TECHNICAL language. Particle physics must have moved on rapidly since the 1980s, so this is mainly of historical interest; though a scientifically well-primed member of the general public might still find much of interest within its pages.
