Soon after Hercules Pakenham was appointed the Commanding Officer of the London Irish Rifles in 1906, he enrolled Albert Starck, the principal bagpipe maker for the British Army, as his personal piper and charged him to teach the pipes to volunteers from the ranks. This book tells the story, with more than a glimpse of Cockney humour and Irish wit, of the Pipe Band that evolved from Pakenham's and Starck's efforts a hundred years ago. Apart from being an illustrated chronological history of the Band at war and peace, this book is also about the men and women who have contributed to its success. Family ties and dynasties are highlighted, as are the mascots who have marched with the Pipes & Drums. The development of the 'Irish distinctiveness' in the Band's uniforms is charted and the current uniforms illustrated in colour. The origins and lyrics of significant elements of the Band's repertoire are also detailed. To put the Band's history in context, an overview of Irish pipes and the use of Irish pipers in war is included, as is the evolution of military drums & bugles, and their use by the London Irish Rifles since 1859. Most importantly this book is testimony to the efforts of The Regimental Association of the London Irish Rifles sustaining the Pipe Band after it was cut from the Army's establishment in 1969. It is a fitting tribute to a unique pipe band, which flourishes in this its centenary year. This 158 page book includes 220 black & white and 12 full colour illustrations. In very good condition with light rubbing and chipping to dust jacket. Boards and inside pages excellent.
