The Playboy of the Western World: A Comedy in Three Acts by J.M. Synge - Second Edition 1907 Edmund John Millington Synge (1871 - 1909) was an Irish playwright, poet, writer, collector of folklore, and a key figure in the Irish Literary Revival. His best-known play The Playboy of the Western World, first performed at the Abbey Theatre, Dublin, on 26 January 1907, was poorly received, due to its bleak ending, depiction of Irish peasants, and idealisation of parricide, leading to hostile audience reactions and riots in Dublin during its opening run. The play is known for its use of the poetic, evocative language of Hiberno-English, heavily influenced by the Irish language, as Synge celebrates the lyrical speech of the Irish. In fair condition with clean pages inside. Discolouration and light foxing, front hinge is becoming loose. Boards are showing signs of wear. Front free endpaper is inscribed in blue ink.
