A contemporary of Thomas Gray (he of the 'Elegy in a Country Churchyard'), William Collins was one of the poets writing such verses as odes and pastoral eclogues, at a time when these had rather fallen out of favour. Although initially poorly received, these gradually gained in popularity over the years, and his reputation was enhanced by favourable opinions from Gray himself, and others. William Collins (1721-1759) was an English poet, second in influence only to Thomas Gray, and an important poet of the middle decades of the 18th century. His lyrical odes mark a progression from the Augustan poetry of Alexander Pope's generation and towards the imaginative ideal of the Romantic era. Following the failure of his collection of odes in 1747, Collins' discouragement, aggravated by drunkenness, so unsettled his mind that he eventually sank into insanity and by 1754 was confined to McDonald's Madhouse in Chelsea. From there he moved to the care of an elder sister in Chichester, who lived with her clergyman husband within the cathedral precincts. Our book is in generally good condition for its age, bound in calf with gilt line borders to the covers, impressed gilt decoration to the spine, and brief title in letters which may have originally been gilt, but now appear black/dark brown. All page edges gilt, and there is a broad gilt band on the inside edge of both covers. Engraved frontispiece portrait of the poet, and aldine anchor & dolphin motif on title page. Previous owner's name neatly inscribed on front pastedown. The sewn binding is generally firm with no loose pages; pages clean and bright apart from the portrait frontispiece and title page, which are both considerably browned and mottled. Green silk page marker present and attached.
