The Portfolio was a British monthly art magazine published in London from 1870 to 1893.[ It was founded by Philip Gilbert Hamerton and promoted contemporary printmaking, especially etching, and was important in the British Etching Revival. Early contributors included Joseph Beavington Atkinson (1822-1886), Francis Turner Palgrave (1824-1897) and Sidney Colvin (1845-1927). It was a monthly periodical published by Seeley & Co; Seeley, Jackson & Halliday This edition published in 1895 looks at the development of Whitehall and was was compiled by William John Loftie a British clergyman and writer, on the history of London, travel, art and architecture. He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin. After holding church appointments, he joined the staff of the Saturday Review, and in 1894 that of the National Observer. As a writer on antiquarian subjects he combined learning and picturesque statement. Covers are torn and stained but holds together well and is in a fair condition
