Although the existence of iron ore in Furness had been known for centuries, it wasn't until 1711 with the erection of the charcoal furnaces at Cunsey and Backbarrow that mining began on a large scale. By 1859 ninety three percent of Furness iron ore was being shipped away and a shipping industry had been created; the first ships built at Barrow were for the iron ore trade. The Furness Railway was built mainly to transport iron ore; the first blast furnaces were built locally to take advantage of the Furness ore. Other industries were attracted to Furness and the town of Barrow was built. The Red Earth is an account of the iron mines which brought about this massive change to Furness. Internally book in very good condition. The cover has some shelf wear & a crease at the front.
