The Rhythm Of Life - Based On The Philosophy Of Lao-tse (reynolds M.e., Translator, Scarce Title)

One of the 'Wisdom of the East' series published by John Murray, this little book is a translation of a translation of the Chinese writer Lao-Tse's "Wu-Wei". The Dutch author's preface assures us that he has used none but Chinese works about Lao-Tse (and only a few, at that), but, having discovered how confused and unintelligible these were, decided to present his work based on his own simple idea of the author "for I felt the truth of (his work) within me as a simple, natural faith". The three sections are entitled "Tao", "Art", "Love", and the final 5 pages are devoted to notes. The 'Wisdom' series also encompassed Buddhism, Persian, Japanese, Hebrew, Egyptian, other Chinese and Arabic thinkers. Henri Jean Francois Borel (1869-1933) wrote extensively on China, and as a result also developed ideas about how the West should better understand China. Our book is in good general condition, given its age, but lacks a dust jacket. Bound in cloth-effect taupe paper-covered boards, it is a little worn to the exterior, with some tearing down the rear spine angle, and very slight bumping of corners. The title etc in blue-green lettering on the front & spine, together with an image of Lao-Tse seated in a lotus blossom, and a graphic showing the 'Wisdom of the East' series title. Inside, a previous owner's name is pencilled at the top of the front pastedown, dated 1926. The sewn binding is generally firm, with no loose pages, but there are occasional points of weakness between gatherings. Pages all very lightly tanned, but clean and bright. No sign of foxing.
