This is a study of how the Royal Navy faced the problems caused by the American revolt against British authority during the years of the American Revolutionary War, 1775 - 1783; why was the British navy unable to crush the rebellion in America by cutting off the flow of arms and military supplies from Europe to the American rebels? In the course of discussing this central question and examining related issues along the way, the author show the limits of Britain's naval power and the doubts that were cast on her policies. New York State-born David Syrett (1939 - 2004) was Distinguished Professor of History at Queens College, City University of New York and a widely respected researcher and documentary editor on eighteenth-century British naval history. Condition: Good. Inside, the book is clean and tightly bound. A bookplate is affixed to the front paste-down end paper. Outside, the page edges are a little dusty and/or foxed, and the dust jacket is lightly faded on the spine. Considering this book is approximately 25 years old, it has been well kept.
