FIRST UK OMNIBUS EDITION. 8vo, b/w illustrations. Original maroon cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Clean and tight. In the original muted olive dust jacket, lettered in white, decorated in black: price-clipped, rubbed, creasing and wear to extremities, rear panel toned. A good copy of the first British omnibus edition of Carson's sea trilogy. Ower's name in biro on inside front cover. Introduction by Brian Vesey-Fitzgerald (1905-1981) a British naturalist, broadcaster and author. He wrote of Carson (who had died the previous year): "There can be few literate people who have not heard of Rachel Carson. Her last book, Silent Spring, sounded a tocsin round the world, prompting governments in many countries to restrict the use of pesticides. It has been given to few women, other than the mistresses of emperors and kings so to influence governments. It has, I believe, been given to no other woman to do so through the medium of a book. Only a very remarkable woman could have written so remarkable a book."
