The purpose of the book is to take rock seriously as a social phenomenon and to get its story right. It begins with a critical analysis of youth culture Simon Frith examines both sociological theories and media images and argues that in order to understand youth music we must first understand youth leisure. The book then reverses its approach, looking at how records reach the consumer market and giving a detailed account of how the music business makes records and money. In the final section Frith analyses rock as an ideology - examining the culture of rock musicians, investigating rock's musical roots and assessing its importance as a mass medium. The book should appeal to anyone with an interest in British pop culture. Rock fans and rock haters alike should read it. The covers have a few light general marks and indentations, and slight rubbing to corners. Some slight foxing marks the front end paper margins; faint foxing freckles on the upper text block edge.
