Condition: Good. The fly cover is faded and battered, but still complete with only very small tears. The boards are in good condition. The pages are in very good condition. The Studio is an extraordinary cinema-verite study of Hollywood at work. It is the story of one motion picture studio, Twentieth Century Fox, and how some of the people there got along, got ahead, fell behind, stayed in place and, above all, made dreams over the course of one year. Some of the dreams were called Dr. Dolittle, Star!, The Boston Strangler, Hello, Dolly! and The Man from the 25th Century. John Gregory Dunne was present where few outsiders have ever been: in the board rooms as well as on the sound stages, the casting conferences as well as the commissary, there when the executives, the producer, the directors said yes, no, maybe, how much. The Studio flows from Los Angeles to New York to hotel suites in Minneapolis and San Francisco after the sneak previews of an $18 million production. It is a story rich in characters: an old producer trying to to hang on, a young executive fighting the charge of nepotism, actors, agents and press agents, a man making $500,000 a year whose mother is an extra. It is often funny, sometimes chilling, always serious. The Studio is a study, in short, of the state of mind called Hollywood.
