This is the 19th of the author's 54 series of 'Voyages Extraordinaires', published between 1863 and 1905. It tells of a rich Chinese man, Kin-Fo, who is bored with life, and after some business misfortune decides to die, but only after he has had some adventures. The story is complicated by competitors who wish him dead, and the tale romps along to a surprisingly happy ending. Jules Gabriel Verne (1828-1905) was a French novelist, poet, and playwright, now best known for his adventure novels "Journey to the Centre of the Earth" (1864), "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" (1870), and "Around the World in Eighty Days" (1872). He is generally considered a major literary author in France and Europe, and had a wide influence on the literary avant-garde and on surrealism. In anglophone regions he was often labelled a children's author, largely because of the highly abridged and altered translations in which his novels have often been printed. He is one of the most widely translated authors in the world. Our book is in good condition, considering its age and genre. All-over decorated red/grey/black cloth exterior is a little stained, rubbed and worn (but only slight bumping of corners and shelf wear to top & tail of spine), and the cloth has bubbled in one or two spots. There is a definite lean. Inside, front endpaper is cracked down its length; rear one partially so, near the bottom, but otherwise the binding is reasonably firm with no loose pages; all pages are a little tanned, and there are signs of foxing on the first 10 leaves or so. Otherwise few marks on the pages; all 8 B&W illustrations (full-page) present. Back cover bears an advertisement for Pears Soap. Free endpapers quite badly browned. Front FEP bears embossed W H Smith stamp at top R/H corner. Illustrations by L Bennet, engraved by Du Mouza, Barbant, and Hildibrand.
