The Vanishing Empire - Chaman Lal. Published by Kyodo Printing Co., Tokyo, Japan, Hardback (no dust jacket) 1937. NB. The title page is missing from this copy, but the publishing details can be seen under the bookseller's sticker on the frontispiece. Illustrated. Ex-library. Pagination does not include appendix. This book, a discussion as to why Britain should relinquish its control over India, was written and published ten years before India achieved independence from Britain in 1947. Independence coincided with the partition of India, in which British India was divided along religious lines into the Dominions of India and Pakistan; the partition was accompanied by violent riots and mass casualties, and the displacement of nearly 15 million people due to religious violence. The writer of the preface, Rabindranath Tagore (1861 - 1941) was a poet, writer, playwright, composer, philosopher and social reformer. Condition: Good. The pages are tanned, but in otherwise good condition. Library stickers have been affixed to the front paste-down end paper, and a New York bookseller's sticker is to be found on the frontispiece. Cover is tanned and discoloured, especially the spine and cover margins.
