The full title of volume 1 is "The Works of Robert Burns with an account of his life and a criticism on his writings. To which are prefixed some observations on the character and condition of the Scottish peasantry. A new edition with additional pieces." Volumes 2, 3 and 4 have the same title page plus extra information on a front free endpaper which in volume 2 says "General correspondence: including pieces of miscellaneous poetry", in volume 3 says "Poems formerly published with some additions. To which is added a history of these poems by Gilbert Burns." and in volume 4 says "Correspondence with Mr George Thomson; including poetry hitherto unpublished or uncollected." The books are bound in brown leather covered boards which have a tortoiseshell-type finish. The boards have gilt decoration round the edges The spines have raised bands, are decorated and have a black title label. All the spines have missing pieces (see photo). All the covers are edgeworn, scuffed and corner-bumped commensurate with age. The front cover of volume 1 has the remains of an old label on it and it and the front free endpaper are detached from the rest of the book but are present. The rest of the book is firmly bound. It has a marbled front pastedown and marbled textblock edges. Page 42 has a 4cm tear. The text in general is clean and bright with browning and foxing confined mainly to the edges of the pages. Volume 2 has cracked hinges at the front and the front cover is almost detached but the rest of this volume remains firmly bound. Marbled text block edges. Owner's signature dated 1822 on front free endpaper. Marbled back pastedown. Volume 3's cover is detached but present and the rest of the volume is firmly bound. Marbled front pastedown. Volume 4 has a cracked hinge at the front cover and the back cover is detached but present. Rest of the book is firmly bound. Marbled front pastedown. It has a fold-out facsimile of Burns' writing from a manuscript in the possession of his son. The facsimile is fragile with some tears but all of it is present. There is an owner's signature on the front free endpaper. The texts of volumes 2,3 and 4 have browning and foxing and thumb marking on some pages but are good considering their age. Volume 3 has the most.
