It tells the story of an egotistical man who experiences luck and misfortunes in the height of 18th-century European society. The four books form volumes 4 to 7 of the publisher's collected works of Tobias Smollett, edited by George Saintsbury in twelve volumes. The books are uniformly bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling and designs on the spines and front boards. The cases of the books are in very good condition with some shelf wear on the boards. The top of the spine of the first volume and bottom of the spine of volumes 2 and 3 are bumped. The contents are tight and clean with some foxing on the endpapers and a few scattered light foxing marks elsewhere within the books.
