Giotto di Bondone, better known simply as Giotto, was an Italian painter and architect from Florence in the late Middle Ages. He is considered the first in a line of great artists who contributed to the Italian renaissance. His masterwork is the decoration of the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, commonly called the Arena Chapel, completed around 1305. 40 major frescoes tell the stories of the early life of the Virgin and the life of Christ. The interior of the chapel duly constitutes the centrepiece of this volume with over a dozen pages in colour showing details taken from the frescoes. The book is one of the 28 volume Time-Life library of art series in first edition. Sarel Eimerl, the author of this volume, a graduate of Oxford, has written novels and books on scientific subjects as well as the history of art. On slipcase a detail of the kneeling Mary Magdalen from an Arena Chapel fresco numbered as scene 37 'The Angel at the Tomb and the Noli Me Tangere' on page 125. End papers depict figures from the Arena Chapel that are to represent Man's virtues and vices - front, the seven Virtues: Hope, Charity, Justice, Faith, Fortitude, Prudence and Temperance; back, the Vices: Wrath, Injustice, Envy, Idolatry, Despair, Folly and Inconstancy. Hardcover. Good condition book with slipcase. Gilt title on spine & cover. Pages free from inscriptions or markings. Slipcase has some minor wear. Leather spine and boards in good to very good condition. 199 pages.
