Colour and b/w images illustrate this volume containing well-known and lesser known examples of paintings and drawings by Peter Paul Rubens. Major works, 'The Elevation of the Cross', c. 1610-1611, a triptych, and 'The Three Graces', 1639, undergo the author's scrutiny alongside the paintings of Anthony van Dyck and Jan Brueghel whom Rubens knew personally. Paintings are printed on many high-quality, unyellowed glossy colour plates. The book is one of the 28 volume Time-Life library of art series in first edition. C. V. Wedgewood, the author, is a historian. She specializes in European history of the 17th century. On slipcase Rubens' portrait 'Le Chapeau de Paille' reveals his brilliance in capturing the delicate tones and textures of female flesh. The work, photographed in closeup, is reproduced in its full proportions on page 188. End papers show drawings of woodcuts Rubens based on his painting, 'the Garden of Love', that is reprinted on page 188. Hardcover. Good condition book with slipcase. Gilt title on spine & cover. Pages free from inscriptions or markings. Slipcase has some minor wear. Leather spine and boards in good to very good condition. 192 pages.
