The Archives of James Boswell, now in the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Yale University, form one of the most important collections of eighteenth-century personal papers known to exist. The Yale Editions of the Private Papers of James Boswell were established in 1949 to publish the papers and these are the first six volumes published in limited editions. Five of the volumes are in their original slip cases. The volumes are all in their original glassine wrappers. The binding materials are grained calf=skin and buckram. The paper is deckle=edge antique laid with cut upper edge in gilt. 1. Boswell's London Journal 1762-1763 together with Journal of My Jaunt Harvest 1762. Limited edition number 572 of 1050, published in 1951. Includes illustrations and fold out map of London. In original glassine wrapper which has some tears. Slip case shows some shelf wear with edge rubbing and minor corner bumping. Boards are in fine condition. Pages are tight. Some foxing. 2. Boswell in Holland 1763-1764, including his correspondence with Belle de Zuylen (Zelide). Limited edition number 572 of 1050, published in 1952. Includes illustrations and fold out map of Holland. In original glassine wrapper which has some tears. Slip case in fine condition. Boards are in fine condition and pages are tight and clean. 3. Boswell on the Grand Tour: Germany and Switzerland 1764. Limited edition number 571 of 1000, published in 1953. Illustrations and maps. In original glassine wrapper which shows some edge wear. Slip case has an area of rubbing on rear edge. Boards are in fine condition and pages are clean and tight. 4. Boswell on the Grand Tour: Italy, Corsica and France 1765-1766. Limited edition number 246 of 400, published in 1955. Illustrations and maps. In original glassine wrapper which shows some wear and small tears. Boards are in fine condition. pages are clean and tight. 5. Boswell in Search of a Wife 1766-1769. Limited edition number 290 of 400, published in 1957. Illustrations and fold out map of Edinburgh. No slip case. in original glassine wrapper which shows some significant tears. Boards are in fine condition with very minor corner bumping. Pages are clean and tight with very occasional foxing. 6. Boswell for the Defence 1769-1774. Limited edition number 156of 350, published in 1960. Illustrations and fold out maps of Edinburgh and London. In original glassine wrapper Boards are in fine condition. Pages are clean and tight.
