In this record of tragedy, incompetence, disorganisation and ignorance, Mac Atasney shows how the Poor Law Board of Guardians and local voluntary relief agencies responded to the Famine in the Lurgan/Portadown area. How the Famine affected Munster and Connacht in well-known but the Famine in Ulster has received less attention. Two myths have grown: the first, that the presence of the linen industry insulated the area against the Famine and second, that, in the words of a prominent Lurgan landowner of the time, 'Northerners are a hardworking industrious people and the blessing of God is upon their labours'. Mac Atasney makes an important contribution to the contemporary debate about the extent to which Ulster was historically different from the rest of Ireland. This copy contains the author's signature. The condition is very good. The pages are slightly tanned at the edges. Clean throughout and tightly bound.
