The show is based on The Railway Series books written by Awdry and later his son Christopher Awdry.The Shining Time Station spin-off series debuted on PBS in the United States for the first time in 1989, marking the show's debut on American soil.In 1989, a sibling show to this one called Tugs aired for a brief period of time before being cancelled.As of right now, the rights to the series are held by HIT Entertainment, which is a subsidiary of Mattel. In July of 2002, HIT Entertainment purchased Gullane Entertainment, therefore they now control the rights to the series.Thomas & Friends: All Engines Go, a 2D-animated remake that was announced by Mattel and launched on Cartoon Network on September 13, 2021, was called "All Engines Go."
