This stylish perennial, produces upright, blue stems, topped with dramatic thistle-like blooms. The flower heads are cone shaped, surrounded by a lacy collar of spiky bracts, making a superb architectural focal point in borders. Eryngium alpinum is ideal for grouping between shorter perennials in sunny, well-drained borders. It copes particularly well with coastal conditions and makes a spectacular cut flower. Grow sea holly plants on light, well-drained soil in full sun. Eryngium plants particularly dislike cold, wet soil in winter which may cause the crown to rot. If planting on heavy soils, dig in plenty of coarse grit to improve drainage prior to planting. Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season until plants are fully established. Leave faded Eryngium flower heads in place until spring to benefit from winter interest they will add to your borders. In cold, wet soils, use a cloche to protect the crown of the plant from winter rainfall. Lift and divide overcrowded
