Three Generations in the Honiton Lace Trade: A Family History by Margaret Tomlinson The author of this book started out with the intention of recording for her own family some of the memories and legends which had been handed down to her from earlier generations. But she soon became involved in research into the lives of her Devon forbears and into the history of the lace trade which had been their means of livelihood. It was the recent revival of interest in Honiton lace which suggested that the story of the Chick family might appeal to a wider public. The Chicks came from the borders of Devon and Somerset, where, by the end of the eighteenth century, they were small yeomen farmers. A move to Branscombe on the East Devon coast in 1804 brought them to an area in which the cottage industry of lace making had long flourished. This account of their experiences as Honiton lace dealers covers three generations and throws new light on the industry itself from its most prosperous years to its eventual decline. On the way we meet some unusual characters-not least Abigail Chick, the farmer's wife who started the family business and who travelled alone all over England to market her wares. We learn of the family ghosts and of the uncle who spent his youth shipwrecked on a cannibal island. Finally we follow Abigail's grandson to London where, after adding foreign and antique laces to his stock-in-trade, he built up his own successful business as a lace merchant.
