Three Years in Canada: An Account of the Actual State of the Country in 1826-7-8. Comprehending its Resources, Productions, Improvements and Capabilities; and Including Sketches of the State of Society, Advice to Emigrants, &c. - John MacTaggart. Two-volume set: Volumes 1 & 2 together. Published in London by Henry Colburn, Hardback two-volume set, 1829. Pagination is the total for two volumes. John MacTaggart (1791 - 1830) was a Scottish author and engineer born near Plunton Castle, in the parish of Borgue, near the central south coast of Scotland. He learned engineering 'on the job' whilst still in Britain, and was subsequently recommended to the post of clerk of works on the Rideau Canal, in Canada, which links the Ottawa river with the St. Lawrence river. Having arrived in Canada in August 1826, MacTaggart wrote some newspaper articles whilst working there, then in 1828 he suffered from an epidemic fever. After being dismissed, he returned from Canada to England, and this book was published in 1829 when he was back in Britain. These books describe various aspects of the country in great detail: geography, history, natural history, governance, people and many more. According to the Rideau Canal National Historic Site, though, many of his, in their opinion, enthusiastically-put ideas were expressed in this book, but some should be taken with a grain of salt, as "he was trying to make the book saleable and clearly exaggerated accounts in many places." Nevertheless, this is an entertaining pair of volumes; in any case, it is describing his view of the Canada of nearly 200 years ago. Condition: Good. Bearing in mind the age of these volumes, they are doing quite well for their age. The pages are mostly tightly bound and free from extraneous marking on the pages, apart from a small number of foxing spots. Each front free end paper has a bookplate affixed to it, and the first volume bears a signature on the same page. There is also foxing on the blank pages and end paper, front and back of each volume. The page edges are substantially tanned, and the top edges are darkened. The quarter-bound hard cover has some scratches and marks, but the main area where some of the covering has flaked off is the title and author on the spines. Small tide marks on the first few pages of volume one.
