Originally written to fill the gap perceived by the author in the "literature of the weed". In addition to the history, it covers the philosophy of smoking, the Poetry of Smoke, Smokers' Stories and other miscellany. Suede covered boards, hand cut pages with gilt to top of page block. Decorative endpapers, original silk marker ribbon (tenuously attached). Gift inscription dated 1901 to obverse of Frontispiece. Original slipcase, in the form of a cigar box now in poor condition, with a picture stuck to the front of a smoking cigar on an ashtray with a lit candle and a newspaper in the background. This is repeated in the interior. One edge of the box is detached but repairable. A rare survivor.
