Trade Union Activists, East and West: Comparisons in Multinational Companies By Guglielmo Meardi Pub: Gower Publishing Limited, London 2000 In his introductory paragraph, the author sets out the range of his study: "This ... focuses on the rank-and-file activists of the trade unions of two different countries, Italy and Poland, considered as heirs of the labour movement." Much of his research is based on qualitative studies, conducted through interviews, with trade unionists from both countries. He takes as a central thesis the idea that working class consciousness has disintegrated and so transformed. The terms "East" and "West" are used to define conceptual rather than geographical differences: he traces similarities and differences between Poland and Italy, suggesting in his conclusion that in both countries there has been, by the late 1990s, a disenchantment and dissatisfaction with democracy and, certainly in Italy, a surprising scepticism about the political role of the trade union movement. Guglielmo Meardi is Professor of Sociology of Work and Economy in Florence, with research interests in the internationalisation of the world of work.
