Tyneside (city & County Histories)
Merchant: Oxfam
Merchant's Category: Media> Books
This series of local histories is aimed at the general reader, college students and the upper forms of secondary schools. The book traces the rise of Tyneside as a great manufacturing and exporting region : from the earliest days of the Geordie pitmen and keelmen and their conflicts with the mercantile oligarchy ;through the growth of the industrial empires, such as the woks of Armstrongs of Elswick and the shipyards of Palmers and Swan Hunters ; to the problems of the Depression years and the plans for future developments. As befits the oldest industrial complex in England, Tyneside has long been a centre of industrial invention and discovery. The book is in good condition for it's age and whilst the spine and pages are intact there is a mottled effect from sunlight upon the edges of the pages which show when the book is closed. There are two postcards placed within the book of The Lantern Tower, St Nicholas Church, Tyneside and of the Black Friars, Smith Company Meeting Hall.
