Rachel Hadas grew up in New York City, where her father, Moses Hadas, taught Classics at Columbia University. Her many books include poetry, essays, and translations; in addition, she is a frequent reviewer and columnist for The (London) Times Literary Supplement. Her new book of poems, "Questions in the Vestibule," is forthcoming from Northwestern University Press in April 2016. Her memoir "Strange Relation" was published by Paul Dry Books in 2011; "The Golden Road," poems, was published by Northwestern University Press in 2012; "Talking to the Dead," selected prose, was published by Spuyten Duyvil in 2015; and her verse translations of Euripides' two Iphigenia plays are forthcoming from Northwestern in 2018. Rachel Hadas is Board of Governors Professor of English at Rutgers University-Newark, where she has taught courses including Mythology in Literature, Children's Literature, and Literature in Medicine, among many others, for more than thirty years. Rachel lives in New York City and Vermont with her husband, visual artist Shalom Gorewitz, with whom she has been working on marrying poetry and video; some of their collaborative work can be seen at www.rachelandshalomshow.com. Rachel's work, both poetry and prose, is bookish but also intimate, rich with literary allusions, dream imagery, and the look and feel of lived life as a teacher, widow, mother, city-dweller, patient, reader, writer, and lover.
