About the urinary system Urinary tract infection is a serious health problem that affects millions of people every year. Normal urine is sterile; it contains fluids, salts, and waste products but is free from bacteria, viruses, and fungi. A urinary tract infection occurs when microorganisms, usually bacteria from the digestive tract, get trapped at the opening of the urethra and begin to multiply.
