1997. Paperback. Excellent condition. Catalogue of an Exhibition of Works held by Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Wakefield, West Yorkshire (1998) The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (1999), Indianapolis Museum of Art (2000). Introduction: Ursula von Rydingsvard makes large-scale sculptures of cedar wood that conjure up ancient topographical landscapes and archaeological artefacts seemingly left by imaginary civilizations inhabited by giants. Although each piece is shaped by the artist as she marks the cedar beam and then cuts it with her circular saw, her works do not seem constructed, or "made" in any way. Rather, they look organic, inevitable manifestations of landscape and natural processes, marked by the vagaries of weather and the accumulation of time. Given von Rydingsvard sculpture and its strong connections to the natural world, it is not surprising that art institutions such as ours, with outdoor exhibition space, have wanted to show her work. The complexity of her constructions is matched by a vision that weaves together early concerns with Minimalism, allusions to rural life, layers of history and the landscape. The result is sculpture whose meanings deepen when exhibited in the open air.
