Van Dyck's Antwerp Sketchbook. Michael Jaffe. 2 vols. Hardback in Slipcase. 1966. Both volumes are in Very Good condition. Cream boards with black and gilt lettering. Ninety illustrations. Protected in the original, removable, transparent film covers (now a little worn). The top 2 cms of the spine of Volume 1 are discoloured. The robust black slipcase is also Very Good, with just some surface rubbing to the edges of the spine. See photographs. Michael Jaffe was a well-known Rubens scholar, and the majority of this record is devoted to the further development of an understanding of the contents of the so-called "Pocketbook" of Rubens. The illustrations are excellent, and the visual content could not be better represented, as the entire sketchbook is documented folio-for-folio. This also seems to be the only book that describes in satisfactory detail the contents of the De Ganay manuscript (whereabouts unknown), and the Johnson manuscript (Princes Gate Collection). The book is an exemplary piece of scholarship.
