This book recalls the 79th Armoured Division, the actions in which it took part, and describing and illustrating the tanks that it devised and employed. These machines were Sherman DD tanks, coming into action for the very first time on the Normany beaches. On D-Day 1944, a strange new breed of tack, with a screen round its hull, crawled out of the sea and, as the screen collapsed, its guns swung into action. As the day wore on, more odd vehicles emerged, some with flails to clear mines, others with bridges. The 79th Armoured Division was charged with the responsibility for the development, operation and manning of a range of modified tanks designed for the assault on Fortress Europe. Vanguard of Victory: The 79th Armoured Division by David Fletcher. Published by HMSO 1984. 87pp. Paperback. Book condition: Very Good - slight spine fading, but clean covers, tightly bound, clean throughout.
