Tag Gronberg. Vienna City of Modernity, 1890 - 1914. Peter Lang, Bern 2007. Pb. in VG cond. No flaws and can be regarded almost as new. Two ill. in colour, on Front Cover and Frontispiece of Bird's Eye View of Vienna. 43 other ill. a few in colour, ph. of buildings and people, repro. of paintings etc. 226pp. The author was Reader in the History of Art and Design at London University. She specialises in urban modernity, so Vienna at the turn of the 20th century would be the natural focus for her researches. The work of the Secessionist painters, Klimt and Moll, is examined and the designers Loos and Floge, but there is also a chapter on the experimental poet Altenberg. Though published in Switzerland the book seems to have been written in English and reads well for an academic publication, though it is not lacking in its source references. This copy PS24.99
