How does the active ingredient Aciclovir work to help with cold sores? Aciclovir works by stopping the herpes simplex virus from reproducing and infecting more cells. Aciclovir is converted to a more active form inside cells of the body that are infected with herpes simplex Warnings and Precautions For external use only. Keep out of reach of children Be sure to wash your hands before and after use.
