The test is a blood test that is collected at home via a prick in the finger and then you squeeze out blood that you drip into a tube. The test must be taken on an empty stomach in the morning. The sample is then sent to the lab for analysis and you will receive your answer digitally as soon as the lab has analysed your sample. What is vitamin A? Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin that occurs in proforms (mainly carotenoids, e.g. beta-carotene) and preformed in the form of retinol and retinyl esters. Preformed (active vitamin A) is only found in animal foods. Why analyse vitamin A? Vitamin A is needed for vision, skin and mucous membranes to function normally. Vitamin A has a fundamental importance for the development, growth and differentiation of the embryo during the earliest part of the pregnancy, so that the fetus develops normally and has normal vision. What is niacin/vitamin B3? Niacin is a water-soluble B vitamin that contributes to normal energy turnover, to reducing fatigue and exhaustion and to the normal functioning of the nervous system. Niacin exists in two forms: nicotinic acid and nicotinamide. Why analyse niacin/vitamin B3? It is very unusual to have a niacin deficiency in the modern world, but it can occur with an extremely limited diet. Severe lack of niacin causes the skin disease pellagra. What is pantothenic acid/vitamin B5? Pantothenic acid is a water-soluble B vitamin. The name comes from the Greek word 'pantos' which means everywhere and just as the name suggests, pantothenic acid is found in most foods. Why analyse pantothenic acid/vitamin B5? Pantothenic acid contributes to normal energy metabolism, reducing fatigue and exhaustion, normal mental performance, normal synthesis and turnover of steroid hormones, vitamin D and certain neurotransmitters/signaling substances. What is biotin/vitamin B7? Biotin is a water-soluble B vitamin that contributes to normal energy metabolism, normal metabolism of macronutrients (carbohydrates, fat and protein), normal functioning of the nervous system, maintaining normal skin, hair and mucous membranes. Why analyse biotin/vitamin B7? Lack of biotin can cause skin problems and hair loss. Biotin also has a number of other important functions in the body (see above).
