A hardback in good condition. Red cloth boards with bevel edges. There is minor corner bumping and shelf wear. The title and front board illustration are in gold. The title and illustration on the spine are faded. There is a cracked hinge at the title page (see photograph). The pages are otherwise tight. The illustrations are in good condition. Watteau is credited with inventing the genre of fetes galantes, scenes of bucolic and idyllic charm, suffused with a theatrical air. Some of his best known subjects were drawn from the world of Italian comedy and ballet. This book, written in French, covers Watteau's life and work and is illustrated with 183 black and white reproductions.
