Volume 6 of the scarce 1844 Abbotsford Edition. Kenilworth is a historical romance novel, first published on 13 January 1821. Set in 1575, it leads up to the elaborate reception of Queen Elizabeth at Kenilworth Castle by the Earl of Leicester, who is complicit in the murder of his wife Amy Robsart at Cumnor. The Pirate (published at the end of 1821 with the date 1822) is based roughly on the life of John Gow who features as Captain Cleveland. The setting is the southern tip of the main island of Shetland (which Scott visited in 1814), towards the end of the 17th century, with 1689 as the likely date of the main incidents. Good condition for age. Many steel engravings. No highlighting or other notes. Foxing to ffep, title page and frontispiece (which still has tissue guard intact). Ex-libris sticker for George Giles. Cover is intact with strong hinges; some discolouration and scuffs/corner bumps.
