Wild Flowers Of Mount Olympus
Merchant: Oxfam
Merchant's Category: Media> Books
This book provides a comprehensive and lavish presentation and explanation of the plant world of Mount Olympus. Four hundred and sixty five photographs, published for the first time here, present the riches and the beauty of vegetation in relationship to their habitat. From sandy shores to mountain peaks, the photographic lens reveals the areas of growth, the plant communities, the individual units. The author and photographer, Dr Arne Strid, achieved in this book that which other scientists had hitherto only attempted. Dr Strid's photographs were intended to give proof to his research. Far from attempting any superficial impression, he recorded with his camera both the the humble and the spectacular, the common and the rare. From the brief information which accompanies the illustrations, even the uninitiated reader may learn and appreciate the significance of Olympus as a biological nucleus in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Balkans, with central European, Asiatic and even African connections. Finally, the third part of the book, the most widely descriptive, provides information on the morphology of plants, their environment, their flowering periods and the geographical proliferation of about one thousand species together with indices. It is addressed to all those who wish to become acquainted in detail with the flora of Olympus.
