Eric Muspratt was an English emigrant to Australia who seems to have spent much of his youth vagabonding around the world, sometimes working and sometimes just being a vagrant. This is his account of a journey he made in the summer of 1926, heading south from London across Europe to try to get back to Australia, without a passport and with little or no money. He stowed away on ships and trains, walked until his shoes wore out and endured cold and hunger and the constant hostility of officialdom. He got tossed in jail for vagrancy. He spent time in Marseille, Venice and Vienna, associating with a variety of bums and criminals and embracing the lifestyle. When driven to extremes he begged and committed petty theft. He never made it past the Balkans and had to turn back to England. A lot of what he went through can only be termed an ordeal; there's a whiff of masochism in the account. But he also communicates the bliss of a night under the stars in a benign climate or a full belly after a lucky score, the excitement of arrival in an unknown place. Muspratt's enthusiasm for pure reckless adventure, taking the good with the bad, is exhilarating. Hardback with dust jacket in protective sleeve, price clipped. Owner inscription with foxing on free front and end papers as well as body edges. Shelf wear reflecting age. Fair copy.
