William Anastasi had a profound effect on the art of his generation, influencing such artists as Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Eva Hesse, Robert Smithson and others. A pioneer of conceptual art, this book features his retrospective exhibition at the Nikolaj Copenhagen Contemporary Art Centre (Jan 6 - March 11, 2001), and marks the first large-scale presentation in Scandinavia of works by this American artist. Between 1966 and 1970 William Anastasi gave four exhibitions at the Dwan Gallery in New York. With the twenty-twenty vision granted by hindsight, these four shows can now be described as epoch making. However, he received only slight attention at that time outside of an extremely narrow circle. Anastasi employs a wide spectrum of techniques: sculpture, photography, painting, drawing, collage, 'sound objects', incisions into the wall, as well as removals of paint and surface plaster from the wall. Inspired by John Cage, among others, Anastasi inserts reality-elements into the artistic context and enlists the aid of randomness as a collaborator. In later decades Anastasi worked quite separately with a theme which has larger social connotations. Reference is made to a succession of works inspired by the word 'Jew'. The artists humanistic beliefs are reflected in his insistence that we of the Christianized world are, for that reason, in the larger (i.e. cultural) sense, all Jews. This, in turn, directly supports his conviction that anti-Semitism, like all similar prejudices, is fueled in every instance by a crisis of self-esteem. Condition of Book: The paperback cover and spine are strong and clean, no marks, tears, scuffing or folding. Slight scoring, and softening at corners. Inner pages are clean, no marks, tears, folds or softening. Outer page edging clean, very slight marking.
