William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream With Illustrations By Arthur Rackham (1908)

This is a stunning edition of William Shakespeare's seminal play A Midsummer Night's Dream. Its lyricism, comedy (both broad and subtle) and magical transformations have long made A Midsummer Night's Dream one of the most popular of Shakespeare's works. The supernatural and the mundane, the illusory and the substantial, are all shimmeringly blended. Love is treated as tragic, poignant, absurd and farcical. 'Lord, what fools these mortals be!', jeers Robin Goodfellow; but the joke may be on him and on his master Oberon when Bottom the weaver, his head transformed into that of an ass, is embraced by the voluptuously amorous Titania. What makes this edition exceedingly special is the fact that it is gloriously illustrated by Arthur Rackham, who is considered to be one of the leading figures in the 'Golden Age' of book illustration (which lasted between approximately 1890 and 1918). Here, many of the key scenes in A Midsummer Night's Dream are rendered in gorgeous watercolour plates but also black and white sketches throughout. This is a stunning edition and the pictures are indeed wonderful. However, there are some signs of age-related wear, including significant damage to spine, some colour plates are partially loose, plus general wear, tanning and foxing.
