This is a story for boys of the late 19th/early 20th century, full of adventure and incident, and set (perhaps unusually for this author) in Russia - other works mentioned were set in Africa and India. Described as a 'realistic' story, it no doubt gave its young readers a colourful idea of life in the wilds of Russia - how realistic or not, the reader may have to decide. Illustrations (dated '01') are by A J Munnings, later best known for his paintings of horses. William Murray Graydon (1864-1946) was an extremely prolific American writer who also wrote under the pen-names Alfred Armitage, William Murray, and Tom Olliver. He wrote adventure, historical fiction and Sexton Blake detective stories for boy's story papers. Sir Alfred James Munnings, KCVO PRA RI (1878-1959) is known as one of England's finest painters of horses, and as an outspoken critic of Modernism. Engaged by Lord Beaverbrook's Canadian War Memorials Fund, he earned several prestigious commissions after the Great War that made him wealthy. Between 1912 and 1914 he was a member of the Newlyn School of artists. His work was part of the art competitions at the 1928 Summer Olympics, the 1932 Summer Olympics, and the 1948 Summer Olympics. He was President of the Royal Academy of Arts (1944-1949). Our book is in surprisingly good general condition for its age, bound in two-tone blue cloth with illustration of soldiers firing at a man in water, in a wild pine forest. Title etc in gilt and blue lettering on the spine. External wear is consistent with age and uses - bumped corners, rubbed edges & angles, shelfwear to top & tail of spine - and the book is rather ageworn & grubby. Inside, traces of a removed pasted label remain on the front cover, and both endpapers are rather browned. The binding is firm, however, with no loose pages; all pages are clean with no sign of foxing; all illustrations present, and all initialled and dated '01'. Two points of slight weakness to the binding either side of gathering pp.65-81; some staining to textblock edges, notably at top & bottom. The book is slightly bowed in the vertical plane.
