Work-a-day Warriors
Merchant: Oxfam
Merchant's Category: Media> Books
A collection of poems and illustrations by Scottish poet Joseph Lee (1876-1949) who chronicled life in the trenches and as a prisoner of war during WWI. As well as a poet and artist, Lee worked as a journalist. While his poems were favourably received at the time and his reputation as a war poet once ranked alongside those of Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon and Rupert Brooke, as the works of Owen and Sassoon grew in popularity, Lee's fame waned, and his poetry became neglected, leading to him being described as "Scotland's 'Forgotten' War Poet". Work-A-Day Warriors contains 39 poems, including four which had previously been published in The Spectator and one, "The Carrion Crow", which had earlier been published in The Nation. As with his earlier works, this volume also contains drawings by Lee. Original edition, 1917. Condition: Fair - covers worn; red spine w/ gilt lettering faded; tanning and foxing on pages/end papers.
