Zotl: Il Bestiaro di Aloys Zotl (1831 - 1887) - Julio Cortazar (text). Published by Franco Maria Ricci Editore, Parma Italy, Hardback (illustrated boards, no dust jacket) 1972. Illustrated. Limited edition, no. 2900 of 3000. Language: Italian. Austrian-born Aloys Zotl was noted for his painting of fantastical animals and other natural history subjects. Decades after his death in 1887 in Eferding, also in Austria, Zotl's work was re-discovered by surrealist writer and poet Andre Breton, who recognized a surrealist aesthetic in it. A 'bestiary' is a collection of short descriptions about all sorts of animals and birds, real and imaginary, often accompanied by a moralising explanation. In 1972, the Italian publisher Franco Maria Ricci editore published this limited edition of 3000 of Zotl's Bestiary/Bestario. This book is presented beautifully: In large format, with black boards with a satin-like sheen, gold lettering and clover design, and a plate of one of the animals. Inside, the pages are light blue, with the clover design in black on the front and rear end papers. The introduction is interspersed with small versions of the images, and the main text has an animal image on the right-hand page, with text on the left. The animals are all beautifully drawn, and affixed via separate plates onto the blue paper. The introduction was written by Vincent Bounoure and translated from French to Italian by Giovanni Mariotti. The text by Julio Cortazar was translated from Spanish to Italian by Flaviarosa Nicoletti Rossini. Condition: Very good. Inside, the pages are clean and tightly bound. Outside, there are some dusty/grubby marks, especially on the back cover.
