This French, quadruple-compact disc product - originally offered to the lucky listener in the Late Noughties, on the desirable, "Sony" label -, contains a fascinating choice of ten composers, all of them, either : French-born & bred ; Or, they made France their home ... as well as this mouth-watering collection, there are also five wondrous conductors, in action! The composers, are : Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) ; Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) ; Charles Koechlin (1867-1950) ; Paul Dukas (1865-1935) ; Camille Saint-Saens (1835-1921, perhaps the best-known gentleman, of this lovely collection) ; Vincent D'Indy (1851-1931) ; Florent Schmitt (1870-1958) ; Albert Roussel (1869-1937) ; Emmanuel Chabrier (1841-94) ; and, last-but-not-least, Arthur Honegger (1892-1955). Disc One (all featuring The Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Charles Munch) :- 1) "La Creation du Monde", by Milhaud (15:53). 2)-9) "Suite provencale pour orchestre" Op.152b, by Milhaud (16:42). 10)-12) "Symphonie sur un chant montagnard Francais", by D'Indy (+ pianist N. Henriot-Schweitzer ; 25:09). 13)-15) "Escales", by Ibert (15:18). Disc Two (all featuring Boston Symph. Orch. cond. Munch) :- 1)-3) "Symphonie No.2 pour orchestre a cordes", by Honegger (20:38). 4)-6) "Symphonie No.5 'di tre re'", by Honegger (23:00). 7)-17) "Bacchus et Ariane (suite de ballet no.2)", by Roussel (16:04). Disc Three (four different conductors) :- 1)-7) "Seven Stars Symphony" Op.132, by Koechlin (Deutsches Symphonie-Orchestre Berlin cond. Mercier + Choeur ... ; 16:58). 5)-7) "Salammbo, Troiseme Suite" Op.76/3, by Schmitt (Orchestre ... Mercier + Choeur ... ; 17:45). 8) "La Nuit", by Saint-Saens (Orchestre National ... cond. Mercier + soprano N. Dessay + flautist P. Blazy ; 11:26). 9) "Le Rouet d'Omphale", by Saint-Saens (Boston Symph. Orch. cond. Munch ; 7:35). The cover opens into a 12-page, EX- condition, mono - except for the Outside Covers - booklet (sample Photo Two) containing : Front-Cover still, obviously some significant characters from the French classical scene, but, being no past-master in the French language, I don't know who they are (and, neither is it made clear within the booklet itself)! ; Tracklisting with movement-timings ; Performance-credits, but neither recording-credits, nor composition-, nor recording-dates ; A four-page essay by J.J. Velly, in the French language. All four CDs are in EX condition.
